Which SIM only deal is worth your money right now?

Mozillion at £2.50 a month is the pick if you barely use your data: 1GB, 500 minutes and 500 texts on EE's network, with 5G, eSIM and EU roaming included, no credit check, and no mid-contract price rises. That price needs a 24 month contract, though. Mozillion's rolling version of the same plan is £2.80, so the freedom to leave whenever you like costs just £3.60 a year.

If 1GB won't last you, Spusu's 3GB plan at £3.90 a month on a one month rolling contract is the better all-rounder. It runs on EE, includes 5G and free EU roaming, and Spusu does not apply annual price rises. The trade-off is a cap of 500 minutes and 500 texts. If you need unlimited calls, Mozillion's 3GB rolling plan costs the same £3.90 with unlimited minutes and texts.

For more data on a tight budget, Lycamobile at £4.00 a month gives you 5GB, 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 100 international minutes on EE. That price comes with a 24 month contract.

30 day SIM only deals

A 30 day SIM only deal renews monthly and can be cancelled with 30 days' notice, so you are never locked in. Rolling deals currently start from £2.80 a month with Mozillion on EE, with Spusu close behind at £2.90, and neither applies mid-contract price rises. Rolling deals suit anyone between phones or unsure how their usage will change.

12 month SIM only deals

A 12 month SIM only deal balances price and commitment. Deals currently start from £2.75 a month with Mozillion, which includes 1GB of data, 500 minutes and 500 texts on EE's network, with 5G and no credit check. For 3GB with unlimited minutes and texts, Mozillion's 12 month plan costs £3.75.

24 month SIM only deals

A 24 month SIM only deal usually carries the lowest monthly price in exchange for the longest commitment. Deals currently start from £2.50 a month with Mozillion on EE, and Mozillion does not apply mid-contract price rises, so £2.50 is what you pay for all 24 months. That removes the biggest risk of a two year deal. You are still locked in if your usage changes, though, and Mozillion's 12 month version costs only 25p a month more. With other networks, check whether they apply mid-contract price rises before committing to two years, because these compound over a longer term. Black Friday SIM only deals

Networks usually start cutting prices in the run-up to Black Friday, and some offers only last a few days. Our Black Friday SIM only deals page collects them as they appear. Check whether an offer price is fixed for the whole contract or only for an introductory period before you commit.

Unlimited data SIM only deals

Unlimited data deals currently start from £14.00 a month on Three's network, and two networks share that price: iD Mobile and Rewild Mobile. Both are rolling plans with no contract, so you can leave whenever you like. The difference is the credit check. iD Mobile runs one and Rewild Mobile doesn't, so Rewild is the easier route if your credit history is a concern. Some networks also apply fair usage limits or speed caps, so it is worth knowing what unlimited actually means first. No credit check SIM only deals

Which networks can you compare here?

You'll find the main UK networks alongside more than a dozen virtual networks, and every MVNO runs on one of the four that own masts. Do I need a credit check on a SIM only deal?

Not always. The networks that do run a credit check are iD Mobile, O2, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, Three and Vodafone, and this mainly applies to 12 and 24 month contracts. The prepay-style networks, including Spusu, Mozillion, Lycamobile and giffgaff, skip it entirely, so a rolling deal from one of them is the quickest route to a SIM if your credit history is a concern.

Can I keep my number when I switch?

Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM and you will receive a porting code by text, free of charge. Give that code to your new network when you sign up, and Ofcom rules require the switch to complete within one working day. Your old SIM keeps working until the transfer goes through, so you are never left without a phone.
